Pine Cobble’s Cassowaries won a trophy for Best Mechanical Design at the 13th annual Berkshire Robotics Challenge, conducted Saturday, March 24, at Lenox Memorial Middle and High School. The Cassowaries team included Matthew Germanowski (eighth grade), Elias Sekkal (seventh grade) and Phoenix Hagy-Weatherbee (sixth grade).

The competition involved student teams from throughout the county using programmable robots built from LEGOkits to complete a variety of missions involving hypothetical scenarios related to food safety. The event, which involved 36 Berkshire County teams comprising more than 270 students ages 8 to 14, was sponsored by Berkshire Applied Technology Council, with major underwriting support from SABIC Innovative Plastics.

Deborah Germanowski, Pine Cobble parent and coach for the Cassowaries, reported that “their robot looked bullet-proof. It contained a gear system and used a modified ball bearing system to turn.”

Congratulations, Cassowaries!
